If you start looking, there is an avalanche of brilliance covers. In the past I saw the Ukulele as a restrictive instrument but clearly that’s an indictment on me as a human being.
Has to be in the running for title of the year. Could easily get a job working for the Daily Telegraph with brilliance like that. I’ve also got some original sporting titles to show my adaptability including “Dragons Breathe Fire On Knights” and “Glory Take Victory”.
I love nothing more than a tokenistic fusion of finely sampled rhymes put to the back of more palatable Caucasian friendly beats. Yeah the Kayne’s and Jay-Z’s of the world are African-American superstars but they always make the music white friendly. My grasp of the terminology doesn’t need to be too in depth to “ball so hard”.
The White Panda have released Bambooyah and it just suits me to a tea. Tracks like “Tongue Tied Tiger” and “Kryptonite Island” play on past loves and jazz the beats up enough that I can throw it on my iPod and fool myself into thinking I’m being productive when I go to the gym. “Lose 2nite” & “Foolish Monsters” are also most notable mentions.
I enjoy the odd run from time to time and I find the iTunes options for Workout music is putrid so Mash Up albums like this gets everything I know and speeds it up enough to have some adrenalin boosting benefits. Featuring what comes together like 35 different one minute grabs, even the most hardened mash up aficionado will find something that tickles them even just a little bit.
Rejoice! Modern technology is such a delight. My more recent forays into the field of education have helped me realise just how significantly technology can improve so many facets of life.
During the last five years I’ve seen a resentment for the imposition and confusion new technology causes technophobes shift toward the glorious efficiency and simplicity that technology brings.
In a 20 minute car ride home from work, I can hear about the girlfriends day, discuss a student issue with a parent, organise to meet a friend at the gym and order flowers for the Valentines Day I missed, all hands free. And to think I thought the biggest breakthrough I’d make would be drinking an Up-N-Go whilst driving. I know all you Apple haters will curse me but the iGeneration has typified the fact that technology shouldn’t be confusing and it should save time rather than create new problems.
I look forward to the day where Siri removes the need for all unnecessary human contact.
I may or may not have been putting all my stolen mp3s off Kazaa onto an external hard drive and stumbled upon Senor Smoke.
Javid does a great Electric Six vocal and he will take you to a gay bar if you ask nicely.
“Howlin’ Belle” is an incredibly punchy track from some noisy bastards from down in Melbourne called The Peep Tempel. Everyone seems quite comfortable to put it in the garage or rock n roll genres and it certainly tips it’s hat in that direction but I’m more comfortable with disco punk myself. Such a tightly packed song to get everything into 3 minutes 23 seconds. Already getting some radio play from the right people, if The Peep Tempel can back up a quality cut like “Howlin’ Belle” with a solid overall release due out Feb 2012, next year will be a very very good year for these lads.
Their other featured track “Lance” is also worth a listen.
Alexander Gow & more so Paul Dempsey are two of my favourite Australian vocalists. While I’m an Oh Mercy fan, it’s difficult to share any Oh Mercy with my friends and leave them spellbound. However seeing the humble and bumble way Gow interacts with the crowd, his live performance is where you see his brilliance in full. Honestly I don’t think Gow realises just what a talent he is as opposed to some artists like Ernest Ellis who seems to perform in waiting for the applause and accolades he so richy deserves (bullshit).
Paul Dempsey on the other hand is pure songwriting royalty. The richness in his raspy tones is incredibly original and the feeling he generates in his music is something else all together. By chance I checked this track which fell into my inbox and while I’m not really an accurate judge as I hadn’t heard the original of “Kare Kare” but it certainly showcases the talents of these two vocalists (more so Dempsey).
We’ve been burnt by some horrific Crowded House covers in the past (99% of the covers I’ve heard) but I think this does the Finn harmonising and music founded in guitar interplay justice.
Mayer Hawthorne sings like a saint and swears like a sailor. Found this little number while trawling the iStore for Apps and other shit I could waste my money on without having to shower / put effort into life. If like me, you heard the song before seeking out the clip you could be forgiven (as I forgave myself) for thinking the man behind the vocal would be a smartly dressed John Legend looking chap. The clip is very Mr & Mrs Smith but imagine a male less handsome and a more handsome female (Taylor Cole for you Google deviates). Enjoyable hearing these kinds of tunes without conjuring images of Michael Buble. Having said that, the track is only a couple of curse words off having a red hot chance at making the Alan Jones selects range.
