Soundwave 2012 Review

Another Summer comes and goes and leaves with it the vivid memories of the Australian festival season. Unless you live in Perth chances are you weren’t left with many memories of an Australian Summer but thats another story. Last Sunday saw myself and various compadres head on down to Homebush for what would be my second outing to Australia’s quickest growing
festival (if you’re asking me… though I doubt people are) – Soundwave.

Beefed Up

It’s that time of year again when one of Australia’s prominence-gaining festivals – Groovin’ The Moo – announces which ensemble of bands it will be taking off the beaten track to their rural hideways throughout the country. The first announcement has a few juicy offerings in there, let me share them with you now, like a lolly bag amongst sticky kindergarten kids.

360// Adrian Lux (SWE)// Andrew W.K One-Man-Party Tour (USA);//Beni// Big Scary//Bluejuice//Chiddy Bang (UK)// City and Colour (CAN)//Digitalism (GER)//The Getaway Plan//Gold Fields//Hermitude//Hilltop Hoods//Kaiser Chiefs (UK)// Kimbra//The Maccabees (UK)//Matt Corby//Muscles//Mutemath (USA)//Naysayer & Gilsun//Parkway Drive//Public Enemy (USA)//Purple Sneakers DJs//San Cisco//Wavves (USA).

As you can see there is quite a considerable array of local and international talent, with festival whores, festival debutantes and just some acts we haven’t seen play in a while ALL taking the stage. This is the strongest GTM lineup so far and it can only get better. For more lineup and ticket info click HERE

Return of the Ninja.. and Co.

If you weren’t paying attention towards the end of 2010 and during their blistering tour at the start of 2011, you’ll have little idea who Die Antwoord are. If I tell you they’re a trio of South Africans who are well practiced in the art of Zef, dropping raps and rhymes over the top of thick electro-rave beats it might even confuse you more. Just a quick promo to tell you that the guys have their highly anticipated follow up album – Ten$ion – coming out next week. If you’ve been a fan for a while you’ll be as excited as I am. If not, there’s never been a better time to get into it.

The guys are going to be touring soon as part of the Future Music festival, and also playing sideshows around the country. For all the info you need, click here. I’ll see you at the Enmore, getting my fokken Zef on.

A Spent Force?

Before the Indian cricket team came to our shores there were many doubts over the state of Australian cricket. With our top order not performing, injuries running through the bowling attack and… well… Brad Haddin, as well as the question marks over the form of Ponting and Hussey, it was only a natural reaction for Australian cricket fans to be worried about facing the historically-tested, most prolific batting order in the world. Not only that, but they’d come here after receiving a 4-0 drubbing in England and looked like they had a point to prove. Throw in Sachin’s 100th century and it had the potential for so very, very much in a rivalry that I’ve always enjoyed.

Fast forward to one month later and oh my, how things have changed. Continue reading

Sydney Big Day Out Review

The day before this years Sydney Big Day Out presented attendees with a likelihood that Umbrella’s and ponchos would be the fashionable items. I fell into the trap and prepared myself for another deluge, despite knowing in the back of my mind that it had never, ever, rained all day for more than an hour or two at the 12 Big Day Outs I had previously attended. When I arrived at the carpark it was pouring and things were looking grim. That quickly changed as another Big Day Out came and went… here is what I saw… Continue reading

Noel Gallagher @ The Enmore – Jan 23

Noel

There are a few things I need to say before I start writing this. I need to declare that, in many ways this will be a biased review because, for all intents and purposes – I love Noel Gallagher. Not in the way I love boobs but I’m sure you understand. Morning Glory by Oasis was the very first CD I ever bought with my own money – I didn’t even understand the significance of the album at the time. Since then I had the pleasure of catching Oasis 3 times, with every time being phenomenal for a different reason. Then about 2 years back we all heard the news that everyone had been waiting for (albeit for different reasons – the fans for sadness and the critics getting to say ‘I told you so’) and Oasis were no more. You’ve probably felt my palpable excitement since the forming and album release of his High Flying Birds last year. I have, however, said enough about the album, so lets move on.

Javid’s Top 10 of 2011

Thats right ladies and gentlemen. Can you believe another year has passed? Unlike Jesus there’s actually physical proof so don’t try and deny it! Just like the last 3 years this means that it’s time for me to regale you all with my opinion on what the best albums have been over the last 12 months. There are a few things I’ll just clarify quickly:

1. This is my opinion. If you’re going to say to me ‘why isn’t (insert album here) in the list?’ – it’s because it’s MY list. If you want to come up with your own blog and write your own list of albums of the year then please, feel free. I will then proceed to dress you down based on your stupid choices and you’ll have nothing left but to DEAL with it! Muahahaha.

2. Stemming from the previously mentioned point this is, once again, an opinion piece. If I wanted to write about who was the most commercially successful then you’d all be bored as fuck as I regale you with stories about Justin Bieber, Adele, and a whole bunch of other artists I personally wouldn’t be too saddened or disappointed to read about the death of. It would also affect our readership and credibility. I would also have to indulge in a healthy round of self-flagellation to cleanse myself of the sin that would result.

If you think you can handle these two facts then dear reader, read on as you get another person drilling you with another list at this time of year. Continue reading

Man Power

If you’ve got even a muted interest on the religion of many of us here at DWB (that is, English Premier League), you’ll have heard the name of Manchester City being mentioned louder and louder over the years. Since the acquisition of the club by the Abu Dhabi United Group and Sheikh Mansour  bin Zayed Al Nahyan in 2008, they’ve become one of the richest and highest spending clubs in the country, let alone Europe. They currently sit on top of the league and have only recently finally lost a game. While the argument over whether you can buy success has been long and heated for many years, thats not why I’m here – even though by winning the FA Cup last year, and some of the displays this year, the point has been made. The reason I write this evening is due to one man, perhaps the best buy of the whole lot – team manager Roberto Mancini. Continue reading
